What is identification of subpopulations and why is it important in drug development?

Identification of subpopulations is the process of grouping the individuals affected by a disease by their commonalities. Identification of subpopulations helps us to understand why different individuals respond differently to the same therapy or why different individuals with the same disease exhibit different symptoms.
