What are responders and non-responders and why are they important in drug development?

Responders and non-responders can be found in both investigational drug studies as well as in clinical settings for already approved drugs. Responders are individuals in whom a drug or therapy produces a desired response. Individuals that do not demonstrate a change in their condition, or who experience an adverse response to the drug, are non-responders.
