What is informed consent and why is it important in drug development?

The goal of informed consent is to provide people with sufficient information so they can make the most informed decision possible about whether or not to continue participation in clinical research. While consenting an individual, the clinical study in question is summarized and the rights of the participant are stated. Often individuals sign a document containing this information to officially confirm they have consented to the research.
