What is an approved compound and why is it important in drug development?

An approved compound is a drug or small molecule that has already received approval from the FDA for use as a drug in humans. Although drugs are approved for use with specific conditions, occasionally existing medications can be repurposed to treat diseases other than the condition they were initially designed for.
