Genetic Alliance Launches Collaboration with Exceptional Parent Magazine

Washington, DC – April 5, 2011 – Exceptional Parent Magazine and Genetic Alliance are excited to announce a new partnership. Exceptional Parent magazine has invited Genetic Alliance, in each issue, to highlight resources, programs, and tools that make life easier for individuals, families, and communities living with disabilities. Through this new monthly column, Genetic Alliance and Exceptional Parent will forge new connections between the disability and genetics communities and showcase the benefits that are possible in considering the two together.

“With the simultaneous growth of scientific knowledge and testing capability, we are continuously learning that there is tremendous overlap between the disability and genetics communities,” said Alyson Krokosky, assistant director of genetics resources and services at Genetic Alliance. “As an individual with disabilities as well as professional training in genetics, I have a foot in both communities and see the commonalities firsthand.”

The foundation for this partnership was laid more than a decade ago when Sharon Terry, president and chief executive officer of Genetic Alliance, contributed to the article, “Meeting the Needs of Affected Individuals in the New Genetics Age” published in Exceptional Parent. More recently, Joe Valenzano, president, chief executive officer of EP Global Communications, Inc, and publisher of Exceptional Parent received the Art of Reporting Award at the 2010 Genetic Alliance Annual Conference for his passion and commitment to genetics and his promotion of measures that save lives.

“At Exceptional Parent we have written about conditions ranging from mitochondrial disorders to Pompe disease, Cystic Fibrosis, Tay Sachs, and a host of others,” said Valenzano. “We try to stay abreast of the fast-paced revolution in science, with a particular interest in newborn screening, to improve quality of life and expand knowledge and understanding of this exciting area of medicine and health for the benefit of all exceptional families for generations to come.”

By highlighting relevant issues on a monthly basis, Genetic Alliance staff will help to equip the readers of Exceptional Parent with credible, quality, information that will help them as they care for their loved ones.
