What is a HTS assay and why is it important in drug development?

An assay is an analytical test that measures the activity of a compound on a target of interest. Assays are used to screen libraries of different compounds to determine if any of the compounds have the desired biological effects on the target. A HTS assay is an assay that has been designed to be compatible with high throughput screening (HTS) systems. With a HTS system and HTS compatible assays, tens of thousands of compounds can be tested rapidly to determine whether any of them have the desired biological effects.
