On March 14, 2008, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act was heard in the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health. Francis Collins testified on the first of two panels during the hearing presenting medical and scientific rationale for the bill. Sharon Terry, President and CEO of Genetic Alliance and Chair of the Coalition for Genetic Fairness, presented the stories of victims of genetic discrimination and urged the Subcommittee members present to support GINA. Karen Pollitz of the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute presented the case for why current laws do not protect genetic information. Dave Escher, a former Burlington Northern Santa Fe worker, shared his genetic discrimination experience with those present.
