Second Gene Screen: A Night of Film on Health and Genetics

On Thursday, July 15, 2010, after Genetics Day on the Hill, Genetic Alliance hosted its second annual Gene Screen: A Night of Film on Health and Genetics, in conjunction with its Annual Conference, Advancing Novel Partnerships. The event was held at E Street Cinema, in Washington, DC. The mini-film festival was open for submissions, and after a competitive selection process, the following films were screened.

6:00 PM:

In My Hands: A Story of Marfan Syndrome
In My Hands focuses on people learning to live with Marfan Syndrome, a little-known and potentially fatal genetic connective tissue disorder. By following several families we see the despair and loneliness of trying to fit in with what is deemed normal, and we are moved by the hop and inspiration in finding a unique beauty within oneself. 7:30 PM: A Series of 4 short films

The Power of Two (Trailer)
The Power of Two The Power of Two is a feature-length, character-driven documentary in production with international implications about the importance of organ donation and transplantation, Cystic Fibrosis awareness and related health causes. This film is about the lives of three separate families that have experience with a Jewish genetic disorder.

On Beauty This excerpt from a film-in-production follows former fashion photographer Rick Guidotti as he skillfully employs his lens to redefine beauty by photographing children who are often relegated to the shadows because of their genetic conditions. Darius Goes West: The Roll of His Life (First Prize Winner)
Darius Goes West A group of college students take 15-year-old Darius Weems, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, out west to try to get his wheelchair customized on "Pimp My Ride.” Learn more.
10pm: Q&A with filmmakers

We had many excellent entries for Gene Screen; we just did not have enough time to screen them all! Check out some of the organizations who submitted films:

  • California Institute of Regenerative Medicine: “Progress and Promise in Huntington’s” describes the devastating impact of Huntington’s disease on affected families, the inspirational power of patient advocacy, and the promise of stem cell research to find a cure.
  • Jacob’s Cure: As Daylight Breaks is a documentary about Jordana Holovach and her son, Jacob, who was diagnosed with Canavan disease at the age of six months. The film depicts the struggle of love and the connection of two human souls combating a disease that threatens to part them.
