Art of Novel Partnership promotes collaboration that models systems transformation. The partnership includes individuals, families, and communities from various stakeholder groups: disease-specific organizations, healthcare professionals, community-based organizations, academia, industry, government, laboratories, and others. The partnership demonstrates willingness to create open space for shared resources that ultimately lead to better health for all – through accelerated research and development, innovative community engagement, technological savvy, and more.
Art of Listening honors a health professional who is a caring, receptive professional in the lives of individuals and families living with genetic conditions.
Art of Reporting acknowledges a media professional whose reporting contributes to public awareness and understanding about genetic advancements or advocacy organizations and their impact on real people’s lives.

Nominee Evaluation Guidelines

Art of Listening - honors a health professional who is a caring, receptive professional in the lives of individuals and families living with genetic conditions. Someone who:
- Takes the time to listen and understand--beyond the medical diagnosis (25 points)
- Understands the importance of listening as an invaluable key to understanding and helping and so a number of families and individuals offer testimony (25 points)
- Eases the difficult, often frustrating, journey faced by individuals and families dealing with the uncertainties and ambiguities of a genetic condition (25 points)
- Appreciates the power of advocacy organizations (25 points)
Art of Reporting - acknowledges a media professional whose reporting contributes to public awareness and understanding about genetic advancements or advocacy organizations and their impact on real people’s lives. Someone who has:
- Produced an especially powerful print or broadcast piece that builds public awareness of genetics or genetic conditions (20 points)
- Worked together with an advocacy organization to produce the piece (20points)
- Was accurate in their representation of the condition and the science (20 points)
- Models excellence in reporting, exemplifying the compassion and caring that is so important in explaining and reporting on genetic conditions (20 points)
- Contributes to public awareness and understanding about genetic advancements and their impact on real people's lives (10 points)
- Heightens awareness of the fine line between education and exploitation and of the sensitivities that surround writing about people with genetic conditions (10 points)
- Was accurate in their representation of the condition and the science (5 points)
Art of Novel Partnership - promotes collaboration that models systems transformation. The partnership includes individuals, families, and communities from various stakeholder groups: disease-specific organizations, healthcare professionals, community-based organizations, academia, industry, government, laboratories, and others. The partnership demonstrates willingness to create open space for shared resources that ultimately lead to better health for all – through accelerated research and development, innovative community engagement, technological savvy, and more. Someone who has:
- Includes formal, contractual relationships among at least 3 of multiple stakeholder groups* (25 points)
- Shows evidence that all partners fully participate in project or product planning and execution (25 points)
- Models systems transformation – the project is innovative and improves a system through the partnership (35 points)
- Demonstrates open space among partners and externally through the collaboration’s project or product (15 points)

Winners will be honored during the 2010 Genetic Alliance Annual Conference - Advancing Novel Partnerships, at the Annual Awards Dinner on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.
