Accelerating Genomic Translation Through Partnerships, Collaborative Activities, and Health Information Technology

Translation of human genome knowledge and its application into public health practice require careful, scientific-based approaches involving multidisciplinary partnerships. This session describes specific examples of these approaches in the U.S. and Canada and will facilitate a discussion for accelerating genomics translation through partnerships and collaborative activities. The CDC’s National Office of Public Health Genomics (NOPHG) will describe their evidence-based process for evaluating genetic tests (EGAPP); creation of a network of genomics stakeholders (GAPPNet); and the development of new projects to translate genomic knowledge into education, surveillance, and policy interventions. A project at the Montreal Heart Institute Pharmacogenomics Centre will be presented as an example of efforts to bridge the translation gap in Canada. Through this project, a prototype informatics pipeline was developed to inform doctors of an available pharmacogenomic test at the time of prescribing Warfarin in a specific clinic.
