Class Projects
In addition to offering individual internship opportunities, Genetic Alliance has partnered with genetic counseling graduate programs to offer semester or year-long projects. Genetic Alliance and graduate program staff customize a project outline and parameters based on mutually beneficial goals. Typically, classes visit the Genetic Alliance offices twice throughout the project, once as an introduction and project kick-off and once at the end of the project to present results and discuss the overall experience. Throughout the project, students work independently and off-site, with Genetic Alliance staff available as needed for guidance and support. Students gain experience in project management, presentation skills, working with diverse partners, and writing genetics content. Some of the most rewarding outcomes for students have been a better understanding of the perspectives of condition-specific advocacy organizations and the refinement of skills that accompany a “real life” opportunity to manage a project with multiple internal and external partners.
Past class projects:
- Developing Making Sense of Your Genes: A Guide to Genetic Counseling
- Writing content for WikiGenetics
- Assisting an advocacy organization in creating customized family health history booklets using the Does It Run In the Family? tool
- Creating and editing website content for an advocacy organization using
the Trust It or Trash It? tool
