Cathy Cantilena is a physician, wife, and mother of four children living in Potomac, MD. She was born and raised in the Bronx, NY. She received her BS in Biochemistry from Manhattan College and her medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School. She is an internist with subspecialty certification in transfusion medicine. She began her career in the Public Health Service at the National Institutes of Health almost 20 years ago. For eight years, she served as Medical Director of the American Red Cross Blood Services of the Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Region. She currently directs the training programs in transfusion medicine at NIH and is the Executive Medical Director for Baltimore Rh Typing Labs.

She was diagnosed with lymphangioleimyomatosis (LAM) approximately seven years ago and, with precipitous decline in pulmonary function, was oxygen-dependent four years later. She underwent double lung transplant in 2006 and energetically returned to healthy life soon thereafter.
