Attachment Conference: Leadership Workshop

Attachment Conference: Leadership Workshop

“Will I be there when I need me… And therefore…will I be there when you need me?”

Genetic Alliance Leadership Workshop: Applying the Attachment Question to Self as Leader and Follower

Please note: This workshop is open by invitation. To participate, please send in the Leadership Workshop Application.

Genetic Alliance is a system committed to transformation—of individuals within its community; the organization and its relationships with other organizations; and the world. We have discovered over the last eight years that transformation requires leadership at multiple levels and that it begins with one’s self.

This workshop is one more opportunity for us to create the space for profound change in us as individuals, organizations, and communities. Attachment theory is relationally based and typically involves asking the core question, “Will you be there when I need you?” From this starting point, we will challenge ourselves to discover even greater personal and leadership capacities within ourselves.

We believe that transformation is an irreversible, substantive change in identity that shifts our purpose to a higher level. The work begins with us, and in the attachment context, the questions we are asking become, “Will I be there for myself when I need me? ...And therefore…will I be there for you when you need me?” This combination of attention to internal self and external system offers us the context within which to make these deep changes at multiple levels.

This workshop will be an exploration of these two questions as applied to ourselves, our organizations, and the world in which we live. We will frame the workshop with a brief introduction to Attachment Theory. We then will invite you to interact around these personal questions applied to one's self. From there, we will reflect on the implications, consequences, and outcomes to be pursued coming from your experience of applying these questions to yourself.

We also will give you opportunity to think about your future and how you might use this pattern of “applying the attachment question to self” in the context of the whole of your life for the benefit of the whole. At the end of the day, we will debrief together to discover what has emerged individually and collectively that will make a difference in your life, your organization’s life, and life in the larger world.

We will conclude in time for you to get ready for Sue Johnson’s opening plenary lecture of the Attachment Conference, which begins at 6:00 p.m. at The Commons, a five-minute walk from our venue on the EMU campus.
