What does ‘discontinue’ mean and why is it important in drug development?

‘Discontinuing’ means that an investigational compound will no longer be available for use in humans. A drug / therapy can be discontinued at any point in clinical trials due to the acquisition of definitive adverse data. Drugs / therapies can also be discontinued if the are not effective.
