The Monaco family epitomizes why newborn screening is so important. Jana Monaco is the mother of four children, two of whom have IVA, a metabolic disorder detectable at birth. However, when Jana’s oldest son, Stephen, was born, Virginia did not require screening for IVA. Stephen lived a healthy life until age three, when sustained a life-threatening metabolic crisis that left him with neurological damage and severe medical complications. Stephen is now thirteen, and Jana has dedicated her life to making sure all children are screened for IVA. Jana holds several key positions at Children’s National Medical Center and is an Advisory Committee Member for the Health Resources and Services Administration, Maternal and Child Health Bureau.

Innovation is collaborative in nature. The Innovator Series showcases some of the many partners Genetic Alliance has worked with over the past quarter century. Each individual utilized teamwork and a community approach to contribute substantially to innovation in genetics and health.

Through this video series, we reflect on our successes through the lenses of several visionary members of our community. We will channel their curiosity for inspired innovation in our 26th year
and beyond.

Please enjoy the series. We will continue to unveil new Innovators throughout our 25th year.
